Terrible Things

This week in class we read "Terrible Things." It is an allegory. An allegory is a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one.

Here is an animated version for you to watch.

Question of the Week

“What’s your all time favorite sport?” Last night I asked my brother Rashad  that question. He answered by saying “basketball”. Then he started to go on and on about it. He started liking basketball at the age of 7. He thought it was cool and interesting to watch. He wanted to try the sport. He started watching youtube videos about Russell Westbrook and his techniques. Then he started to be a good fan of Russell Westbrook. After watching a few videos about Westbrook, the next couple of days he went outside to practice basketball and try to be like Westbrook. He practiced and practiced and practiced until he got Westbrook’s basic moves down. He really wanted to become like that player, so he started to learn more about him.
He got to the point where he wanted to be on a traveling basketball team. So he did. He went to one of the tryouts one day and then gave it his all. He showed all the coaches what he could do and by the time he was done with the day, they already got the email asking him to be on the team. He was so excited. He got to be the number 0, just like Westbrook. The season started and he just became more confident about himself.

Movie Review
The Right Stuff

The Right Stuff was a movie about space. These people were trying out to be the first men in space, and there were all these different tasks they had to complete. There were hundreds of people trying out. It was really stressful for them and their family members. There were seven astronauts altogether. There were many side stories as well.
In the beginning there was a really cool intro that gets you interested in the movie. It said there was a demon that lived in the air, and whoever challenged it would die. Their controls would freeze up. The plane would buffet wildly, and they would disintegrate. The air would not move out of the way. The demon lived behind the sound barrier that no man could ever pass, but then eventually a man broke the sound barrier.

Book Review
Killing Mr Griffin  (spoilers)
The book Killing Mr Griffin is an amazing thriller written by Lois Duncan. In the story, five kids decide to pull a prank on their English teacher Mr Griffin, but it all goes wrong. Mr Griffin is a very strict teacher with no heart. Thinking it will make him less strict Mark, Jeff, David, Betsy, and Susan decide to scare him. Susan, being the top student, takes a meeting with Mr Griffin. After the meeting he goes outside where the boys put a bag over his head and drive to a location only they know about. While this is happening Susan get’s a ride to the location with Betsy. Once at the location the students blindfold Mr Griffin and disguise their voices. They try to scare Mr Griffin by saying there going to kill them but he doesn't buy it. After a while of conversation Mark announces that he's going to leave him there, and the others have no choice but to do so. It's the next day that Susan decides to check on Mr Griffin and takes Dave along. Upon arriving they realize Mr Griffin is DEAD, and the rest of the book is spent trying to cover their tracks.

  3. Here is my perspective. The terrible things are the Nazis, and all of the animals are the Jews. The terrible things are taking away certain animals one by one by their appearance. For instance, they came one time to take away all animals with bushy tails. The Nazis took away people who had a certain heritage, which were the Jews. Obviously, we all know that this is what the whole story is trying to tell you. But, what I really don't understand is why the rabbits judged the other animals too, after those animals got taken away. Like how they said, "Oh nobody really liked those frogs anyways. They were slimy and gross creatures. And those fish weren't ever really nice to us anyways." I don't get that part. Hopefully I'll get an answer to my question, but I don't understand why the rabbits acted that way.

  4. I believe that the message that the video is trying to give is that the terrible things are going to take every animal away. The terrible things are coming and going and every time they leave they take some kind of animal. All the animals that are there catch on to it at some point. I believe the message it is trying to send is that everyone should alert everyone that doesn't know. If some people know and others don't then the ones that don't know will be taken away and not have time to run and hide by the time they are taking everyone else.

  5. I think what the message of the rabbit is going to tell to the other animals is to help their friend or their family because they were caught by the 3 evil or just go tell the other animal to help each other because no one want to be catch by them. Each time when the 3 evil come to the area, they call out the body that the animal has. All of the animal was caught except for the little rabbit so the little rabbit is going to get help or going to do by his/her self.

  11. I think the message of the video is that the animals represented as the Jews who were taken away to the concentration camp during world war II, each of their peers get taken away."Not me," they are all quick to say, though when it is time for the terrible things to call on their group, they hope for someone to step in to help. By the end, the whole forest has been cleared, and the final group of animals is taken with little hope of being saved. The animals all comply with what is being asked of them, even though they know it is wrong, in hopes that they won't be affected. Instead of standing up for themselves, they allow themselves to be taken away without even putting up a fight.

  23. I Think the author is trying to tell us how its unjustified for the terrible things to come and take away the birds just because they have feathers or the fish because they have scales. When the animals were being taken away, they put up almost no fight. They did try to hide, but other then that they did not stand up for them selves, and neither did anyone else. By the end, almost all of the forest creatures were gone, but if the animals would have protested against the terrible things, maybe the terrible things would not have been able to capture them all. So I think the author is trying to tech us not to let people take advantage of us and tech us that is we stick together we can accomplish a lot more.

  25. During World War 2, terrible things did happen but they probably didn't have to. The animals in this video represent the Jews of the Holocaust in the early 1900's. During the Holocaust the Nazis killed millions of Jews but there was never a major rebellion against the Nazis. Maybe if the Jews did rebel, maybe if they would have done something about it instead of just hoping that they wouldn't be next, the Holocaust wouldn't have even happened.

  27. I think the message was to work together. I think all of us have been in a situation where we have to work together, even if no ones in trouble. In the story "The Terrible Things" the animals are in trouble and they're scared. Most of the time when people are scared they panic and do things without thought. My thoughts are would things of gone differently if they were to stay together. I think they would of gone differently because in the holocaust which the video is most likely based upon, (now that I have said this I might as well say the animals are being placed as the Jews and the terrible things as the Nazis) most of them would live. In the holocaust most of the Jews die and then the Americans band together and defeat the Nazis

  37. In the animation "The Terrible Things", there are more than one messages being conveyed. The message/moral that I pick up from this video is that catching things early on can prevent disaster. By this I mean that if the animals in the clearing had realized that what the Terrible Things were doing in the beginning to the birds was unfair, then they could have teamed up and called out the Terrible Things. However, they didn't, because they were scared. The Terrible Things ended up taking all the animals away and leaving just the little bunny alone.
However, it could also be looked at as when people are scared, they end up ignoring the terrible things happening around them. All of the animals in the clearing didn't even think about the fact that the birds being taken away was a bad thing. They all kind of brushed it off and ignored it. They made excuses such as "There will be more space in the trees now" and "Oh, they were so noisy anyway." None of them thought that what was happening was unfair until it happened to them, because they were scared.

  40. I think the message in this story was to go do what you believe in. During the holocaust there were people being taken away to concentration camps. Though many people wanted to help and tell others that this was wrong they didn't want to be taken away themselves. Like in this video the animals have been taken away by the "Terrible Things". Little Rabbit thought it was wrong that they took the other animals away without valid reasoning but if Little Rabbit said something she would then be taken too, by the "Terrible Things" even if she was right and others agreed. If these people stood up and spoke their minds they could have prevented the situation from happening.

  41. I think the message of the story is that we always look the other way when we see danger but never really stand up to what we believe is the right choice because we don't want the terrible thing that is happening to the people in danger to happen to us as well.

  42. I believe the message in the allegory is to work together, not just watch and do nothing as terrible things happen. I mean if all the animals banded together no one would have been taken but they didn't. The same could have gone for the Jews if they all banded together. For example the revolutionary war they all banded together and fought for what they wanted even if their might have been less Americans than British soldiers and in the end we won. The same could have been done with the Jews, they could have fought against the Nazis and then maybe not so many would have died.

Instead of the animals all helping each other find a way out from the terrible things they just talked about their perks . Later the more they came back to the animals got scared. 47. I think that the message is that we don't stand up for one and other. Maybe if we did terrible things wouldn't happen. If we defended each other maybe terrible things would stop happening. The point is we don't stand up for each other and when we don't stand up for each other terrible things can happen. We don't stand up for each other we just sit around acting like it never happened and we make excuses as if it is okay to watch terrible things happen around us and not do anything about it.

There were laws made and laws that had to be followed just because they were not the same as others, and people didn't like like that. And once people finally found an excuse, they just came up with more so they would finally be all the same.

  51. It is to show people that you shouldn't pretend to not notice people crying for help. You should tell others or do something. Also it is to tell people to stop pretending and help people who are in need of help.

    1. I´d have to agree because it´s sort of discriminating towards others and it´s similar to bullying.

  52. This made me think slightly of bullying but mostly racism

The message of the video is to help each other and help people that actually need help

  54. The message is on how no one cares to take any action if the problem doesn't involve themselves.

  55. I think the message is that everyone needs to come together and help out in a time of need

  56. I think the story is about how you shouldn't treat someone differently because of how they are or distinguish themselves as. Also, it explains how just because you're different doesn't mean everyone will dislike you.

  58. I think that the Terrible things are Nazis and the animals are the different types of Jewish people. When the terrible things come to take a different animal it is really when some Nazi solderers coming to take a different class of people away to the concentration camps.

  59. For me the moral of this story is that some people don't tend to care what others are going through as long as they are not affected in this case the animals. Once they left they did not want to believe that they would be taken to or affected. Once those animals were gone they would say things like its better of this way with out them but they should of stayed together and they could have defeated the greater thing.

  60. The message of the video Terrible Things is that if anyone is every in danger to try to help them. In thins story animals were taken away. The animal that remained was hidden. The bunny that was hidden could have helped other animals hide. In the Holocaust many people were hiding hiding from the Nazis.

  61. I believe the message the video is trying to get out is to treat people the same even if they are different than you. You should treat people how they want to be treated.

  62. I believe the message is instead of agreeing with the terrible things try to stand up to them. People go with the terrible things to not get hurt but once the damage is done they all feel like they should have done something to stop it witch they should have.

  63. I think that if all the animals had stood up to each other, then maybe the terrible things might have not happened.

  64. I think the message of the story is that we should work together instead of hurting. They pretty much remade the Holocaust. These are terrible things that shouldn't have happened. If we all just worked together none of this would have happened. This is like if someone just hurt someone because they didn't like them. All in all if we all were just friends and people didn't like other people this wouldn't have happened.

  65. I believe that the message of the video is that instead of giving each other out you should help one other like instead of the animals saying "its not me" they should've all hid together and help each other so the bad things wouldn't take them. Even if its not you in the situation you should still try and help one another out. -Savannah Flores

  67. I believe one of the messages conveyed in the story is that when people or things are scared they start to think for themselves only. They try to justify the actions so whatever is threatening them will take mercy on them. The friends they once had they will abandon for their own safety. 1. I agree with you on that statement. Despite what might happen to you, when something bad happens to another person, you shouldn't try and justify why it might be happening to that other person, especially when you can help them.

  68. I believe the animals were Jews and other Europeans were the animals. The terrible things were the Nazi. I believe if the Jews and the other Europeans stuck up together maybe the Nazi would stop.

  69. I think the message in this video is to speak up. Don't look at people getting taken away and act like you don't see them. Just because it didn't happen to you this time doesn't mean it won't happen to you next time. You shouldn't make up reasons as to why they got taken away and make up reasons why you never liked them anyways. Also being different, you shouldn't be pointed out because you are different. No matter if you believe in something else or because you are a different color.

  72. I feel that this is an indirect to help the they people that look needed. maybe top donate to the Orville dam evacuation. And i also think that we should help the people that have to go through all this.

  73. I think this video is saying to speak out when you think something is wrong. This relates to the holocaust because during that time everyone was brushing it off and not speaking up that also relates to a lot of things that are happening today

  74. I believe that this video has a very deep message. It's similar to this poem I read where they came for the socialists but I did not speak out because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak for I was not a Jew. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me. This video is similar to the Holocaust where the terrible things are the people who take the Jews ( animals) to the concentration camp. This video also gives us a feeling that we need to help each other for when we are in need of help, there would be someone who speaks for us.

  75. I believe that the message in this video is that we all need to stand up for each other and help everyone out. If we don't stick together there will be groups of people that will gain to much power and take over everyone.

  76. The message being conveyed in the video is that if one force starts to rise above the rest and others do not like it, then they must find those people with the same mind set and work together. The problem the forest animals had was they didn't like one another because of how they acted or what they looked like. If they had gotten over this then the Terrible Things may not have been that big of a threat. If people in the real world could look beyond looks and skin color than many of our problems could potentially be solved. If the Jews helped each other during the Holocaust, like Mr. Frank helped families in need of hiding, less people would have been killed. Instead, just like the forest animals, they sat back watching the others be taken away and hope that they were not next.
